Inspiration:

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove. - Matthew 3:16

Although Christ was without sin, and therefore had no need to be baptized, He was our perfect example and was baptized by John to fulfill all righteousness. He wanted to show us how important it is to be born again of water, and by so doing, demonstrated that He was willing to submit to the will of the Father to carry out the proper order of things. I wanted warm light to fall upon the Savior’s face and for His heavenward gaze to have an expression of obedience and love for His father in this painting.
