story behind the art

A Mother's Sacrifice

Inspiration:

And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. - Exodus 2:3

There were many women who played a part in making Moses the leader and prophet that he was. There were the two midwives who pharaoh wanted to kill all the male Hebrew babies, yet they did not. Pharaohs’ daughter, who found and raised Moses to be a leader. Miriam, his sister, who made sure her little brother was cared for and later became a great leader in part because of her ability to accept correction from God. Jochebed and Amram knew that their son was special. For three months they hid him at great risk to their whole family, until it was no longer in their power to keep him safe. By placing Moses in the river, Jochebed demonstrated her faith in the protection of the Lord. What strength it must’ve taken to trust in the Lord like that! I believe that her faith was rewarded by being able to become the nursemaid to her own child while in the care of Pharaoh’s daughter. In life we are sometimes called upon to put our trust in the Lord and perform a difficult task in faith. To me, Jochebed is a wonderful example of faith without question.
