One of the most miraculous moments in the Bible is when Jesus Christ walks on water to reach his struggling apostles. Multiple books in the New Testament record this event, including Matthew, Mark, and John. 

In Matthew, we also find a detailed account of Peter petitioning the Savior to join him. To the apostle’s astonishment, not the least of which Peter’s, he can take a few steps out into the storm before doubt takes over, and Christ rescues him. 

The biblical account of Jesus walking on water teaches a great deal about the principle of faith. For example, the miracle of Jesus approaching the apostles did not come until late into the night, reminding us that while God answers some prayers immediately, others require patience and trust amid the raging storm.

Similarly, it is Peter’s faith in Jesus Christ that allows him to mirror the miracle. And it is his fear of his immediate surroundings that causes him to begin to sink. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the storms in our own lives and lose focus on the Savior. And yet, Jesus Christ is always aware of us, willing to reach out and help us when we feel we are drowning.

We live in a world that can be as turbulent as the sea on that stormy night. Some find it hard to keep from drowning, let alone to walk above the waves. All of us will stumble, but as we keep our focus on Jesus Christ--who has already conquered the pain and sin of this world--we will find ourselves able to not only survive the storm but to thrive in it as well.
