story behind the art

Step 1 - Honesty

Inspiration:

The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. - Psalm 18:2

This is the first of a series about overcoming addiction, starting with the act of honesty. I began this series to understand my sons and their journey. I chose the use of birds since they are inclusive to all people and cultures. The first step in recovery happens when we realize that we are powerless to overcome addiction by ourselves. We feel that we are drowning and are willing to look for help. I have painted a tree of life and twelve stars. The fruit of the tree is light and seen as stars that come from the tree. Each star is different, just as eacch step of the recovery process is different. The Tree of Life symbolizes our Savior and how full recovery is possible through Him. His love. His light. His power. All of this imagery surrounds a noble bird. For we are all noble, and are the damaged remnants of our health and relationships caused by addiction. The falling star, to me, represents God's light coming down to us in our despair. God can do impossible things, and He performs these miracles for us who have even a desire to recover, even if those desires are a bare wish in our hearts.
