About this Image:

O how great the goodness of our God, who prepareth a way for our escape from the grasp of this awful monster; yea, that monster, death and hell, which I call the death of the body, and also the death of the spirit. - 2 Nephi 9:10

Everyone can relate to daily accountability. This step is about endurance. I began this series to understand my sons and their journey. I chose the use of birds since they are inclusive to all people and cultures. When we reach step ten, we look in our hearts daily and ask: “Am I true? Do I need to make additional restitution?" True recovery requires diligence. In the painting, a hawk struggles to defend her nest. This time, no matter the cost, she will make the right choice. And though she may become damaged, as represented by the broken feathers, she is becoming stronger. When we continuously make the right choices, it does not matter if we are mocked or battered by the remnants of our old lives. We gain strength and become resolute. The silhouetted birds represent our old life, old friends, old habits that come back to haunt us. The moon is symbol of the peace of home and family. As an aside, I made the moon like I see it, not how it appears in pictures. I have astigmatism, so in my vision the moon always has a little halo around it with bits of color. Perhaps all of our own flaws can help us to see the world with more beauty. I am grateful for what I have been through, for I am stronger now because of the daily struggle. Or the daily accountability to the most important things in life: heart, home, family, and God.

About the Artist:

For CARIN FAUSETT, art has never been an escape from reality; it's been her connection to it. As a child, she grew up wearing hearing aids and thick glasses. She could see the color and movement around her but was cut off from life. Art has allowed her to connect with people; especially as a mother of two recovering addicts. Young people today face immense feelings of isolation and failure. Through her art, Carin communicates these deep emotions and struggles. And with it, an enduring message of hope.
